Upcoming Game Handhelds For August 2022

***Update August 4: The Retroid Pocket 3 pre-order is now expected to start today: .  [9PM EST] Game handheld releases are hard to predict due to supply chain problems and parts shortages, so most release dates should be considered tentative not concrete.  August 2022 In Game Handheld Releases KT-R1C KT-R1C (aka KT R1C) is currently on pace for the metal versions to possibly be ready for pre-order by mid-month and ship out in September. There is no firm date set as of now. This handheld has quickly made it to the top of my most wanted device list recently.  KT-R1C SPECS Other August Retro Game Handheld Happenings  The Miyoo Mini V2/V3 shortage continues but Miyoo is expected to do another restock on the Official Store mid-month. FYI: There's no difference between the V2/V3 other than the V3 shipping out with a more updated firmware.  Possible Pre-Order Appearances  The Miyoo P60 was expected to already be out by appears to be in some sort of software testing hell loop

New Horizontal Miyoo Mini Model

Miyoo has had problems keeping up with demands and sourcing parts for the wildly popular Miyoo Mini, so it looks like their solution is a new horizontal version with the option to add different faceplates to it.  I don't think it matches the retro aesthetic of the original Mini but it's awesome they've found a way to keep this great handheld going into the future.  Not a lot is known yet but this new Mini appears to have a thumbstick and replaceable faceplates as updates.  Source:

Miyoo Mini Custom Buttons on Etsy

SakuraRetroModding has put an assortment of custom face buttons and shell stickers up for pre-order on Etsy. I've never been disappointed with a purchase from SRM.  I have a blue V2 Miyoo Mini on the way and opted for "Pink Clear" face buttons which should be a pretty cool contrast of colors. Can't wait to receive the Mini V2 and buttons to customize it.   Look what I found on Etsy:

We Need More Vertical Retro Game Handhelds

Great vertical handhelds are definitely a rare thing these days but I think the demand certainly exists for more of them especially with the retro game handheld community members that lean more towards classic gaming than modern. A lot of handhelds coming out are starting to be geared more towards current gen gaming. Moontorc recently posted a mockup of a Miyoo "Midi" on Reddit at the halfway size (with a 3.5" screen) between my two favorite vertical handhelds (Miyoo Mini & Anbernic RG-351V).  If Miyoo were to make something like this and keep the price around $100 or so, I'd buy a few of them on the spot! If nothing else, it shows how awesome the Miyoo Mini design is with very little space around the screen!

Black Miyoo Mini Selling Fast

It looks like the Black Variant of the V2 Miyoo Mini is now sold out at the official store on AliExpress. At the moment, they have only 39 of the transparent blue left, 74 of the retro grey and 163 of the white left. I expect the transparent blue to be out by tomorrow. No word yet from Miyoo about when a restock is coming but I'm sure one is on the way.  Since releasing at the end of 2021, the Miyoo Mini's popularity has been drastically higher than anyone including Miyoo could have predicted... I'd still suggest waiting for a restock if you are interested in the Black shell. Most of the other places selling the Mini are just drop shipping them at a higher price.  Store Link Below (Disclosure: this link does not have any affiliate codes embedded and I don't benefit from any sales) US $58.00 | MIYOO MINI V2 Portable Retro Handheld Game Console 2.8Inch IPS HDScreen Video Game Consoles Linux System Classic Gaming Emulator My V1 Miyoo Mini

Two Best Under $60 Micro Retro Game Handheld Options

The market is packed full of "cheap" handhelds, but there aren't many under $60 that are actually good. Two that stick far out of the crowd are the PowKiddy V90 (I have three of them) and the Miyoo Mini (I only have 2 for now). Your best option for ordering either of these at a reasonable price is from the official PowKiddy and Miyoo stores on AliExpress. There are two new versions of the Mini coming out soon as well (translucent blue and translucent black).  Miyoo Mini  The Miyoo Mini sells for between $50 and $60 on average and is well worth the price. The ergonomic design has a premium feel and good for long gaming seasons which is unusual for a handheld this small. Flashing CFW on the Mini is essential and not the most user friendly process so I can only highly recommend this device to people who are fluent in firmware flashing processes or willing to read directions and learn.  My Miyoo Mini Review (Hasn't Been Updated for the latest OnionOS): https://www.retrok

Blue Miyoo Mini Releasing Soon

It looks like the V2 Miyoo Mini will be coming out in a cool see through blue shell pretty soon!  Miyoo can go ahead and take my money now. Looks great! The Mini was definitely a decent surprise for me and the best purchase I've made in a while when it comes to retro handhelds. Can't wait for the Miyoo P60 to release as well which should be a competitor of the Retroid Pocket 2 Plus. Miyoo Mini (V1) Review:

My Most Used Consoles/Devices So Far This Year

Most Used Devices JAN/FEB 2022 My most used platforms this year is definitely a lot different than last year. That's the fun bonus of mixing modern and classic gaming though ... options are near limitless. Over the past 2 months, the Anbernic RG351V and PowKiddy RGB20 have dropped off my 5 most used devices. This will be the first time in a long while that Anbernic hasn't been towards the top of my list.  #1 Xbox Series S   I had completely skipped the Xbox One generation but jumped back into the Xbox realm recently with the Xbox Series S primarily due to how easy it is to use Dev Mode and turn it into a pretty good retro console that can run up to PS2 level games.  I've found myself liking the console as a modern device too, particularly with the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.  #2 Miyoo Mini   The Miyoo Mini was the most surprising great handheld for me in recent months and has become my "take everywhere" handheld. Miyoo Mini Emulation Performance Notes (After 3rd Stock Update)

Light and Loose Notes on Miyoo Mini Performance as of 12/29/2021 *Due to likely developments in the near future, I'm keeping my Performance thoughts vague and light for the moment. Once we have some good custom options, I'll work on definitive statements. My opinions are based only on the systems I've put some time into and are far from definitive.  The 3rd stock update from Miyoo included a lot of improvements, but still leaves a lot to be desired. At the moment,  the best performance possible for all systems is through RetroArch (now that settings can be implemented and saved). Unfortunately, shaders etc. are not viable yet but some video filters and settings can really clean things up. Miyoo's software is definitely on the messy side.  My biggest complaint about the Miyoo Mini so far seems to be with the sound quality which is a real mixed bag, and the process of updating the system is far from ideal...  Fortunately, there are people in the community work

Miyoo Mini Still Sold Out at MIYOO Global Store on AliExpress (Initial Run)

It looks like the Miyoo Mini is out of stock from the manufacturer on AliExpress, but I'm being told the bigger stock is coming up on December 23 in a couple days. From everything I've seen so far on the Miyoo Mini, it could very well be the budget micro-handheld we've been looking for.  MIYOO Global Store: There are some 3rd party sellers charging $64-$67 for the Miyoo Mini (Up From $52) on AE right now, but it would definitely be best to wait and see what happens with availability on Wednesday...  What Others Are Saying:

Miyoo Mini Board Photos

The Miyoo Mini is a handheld I hope works out. Vaidotas on Discord spotted some new teardown photos of this new handheld. I definitely like that it has a volume wheel instead of buttons and the bord looks pretty clean.  On paper, the Miyoo Mini should be able to handle up to PS1 (PSX) no problem and is slightly more powerful than the original RG350M.  I do have one on the way but there is no telling when it will arrive... I'm hoping early January.

Miyoo Mini Priced at $52

I don't have high expectations for the Miyoo Mini, but I really like the looks particularly with the screen so went ahead and ordered one at the low risk price of $52 on AliExpress .  MIYOO Global Store It's likely running the same OS as the S30 which I was not a fan of so we'll see if custom options like Simple30 become possible. Power-wise this handheld should be able to run up to PSX (PlayStation 1)... It appears the Miyoo Mini does have a safe shutdown so this may also be an upgraded version of the S30 OS too. My expectations aren't huge here for the price so hopefully it ends up being better than the price.
